Urban Forestry

PROJECT ARANYA

The project aims to develop an Urban Forest Model at using Miyawaki Methodology (“Miyawaki” technique – founded by Akira Miyawaki which involves growing a variety of indigenous species of trees to create a naturally resilient forest) in cities especially in public places or educational institutions.

The project when implemented can accelerate the growth of native forest in a locality. The method involves planting 3 saplings per square meter and are planted very densely. During this early period, the plantings compete with each other for space and access to light and water—a battle that encourages much faster growth. In conventional afforestation techniques, 1 meter of growth per year is considered the norm. The approach is supposed to ensure that plant growth is 10 times faster and the resulting plantation is 30 times denser than usual. Miyawaki forests grow in two to three years and are self-sustaining.

The Miyawaki Method is one of the most effective tree planting methods for creating forest cover quickly on degraded land that has been used for other purposes such as agriculture or construction.

RPM HSS Panangatri (CSR)

Rise Up Forum in collaboration with UST as part of CSR project has planted around 2500 species belonging to more than 150 species of native plants in .RPM HSS School to build a luscious Miyawaki forest
